The grounds the museum, and the walking area nearby give great views of the Appomattox river and the surrounds without inundating you with the dreadful industrial views of the town's otherwise smoke stack and pollution dominating sky line
An absolutely beautiful spot that sits high on a bluff overlooking the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers. There is a short film that can be viewed in the manor house that explains the area's importance throughout history, specifically during the civil war. They grounds are very well maintained and there are some absolutely stunning trees throughout the property. Birdwatching opportunities are everywhere with plenty of bald eagles, osprey, and cormorants as well as lots of smaller species in the woodline along the bluff such as cardinals, brown thrashers, and various warblers.
Nice, great tour, well kept. A treasure we need to keep
Grant's civil war headquarters during the siege of Petersburg, 1864-65. Pop Beautiful setting at the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers. Includes the Eppes family home, Appomattox Manor (1751) and a reconstructed log cabin like Grant's original, all in a park like setting.
